How to Tell If a Hybrid Mattress is Right for You

Hybrid mattresses seem to be flying off the shelves. In the past few years, our sleep experts have helped nearly 35,000 guests sleep better on a hybrid… So what’s the buzz all about? And is a hybrid right for you? Read on for four reasons to love this best-of-both-worlds bed, plus learn more about Sleep Train’s exclusive hybrid models.

How to Spot a Hybrid Mattress

A hybrid mattress looks a lot like an all-foam model from the outside, with a flat, non-tufted surface and smoothed-over edges (though there are some that look more traditional). Hidden underneath the foam layers is an innerspring support system, usually made from pocketed coils.

While many mattresses use some combination of innersprings and memory foam, they’re not necessarily hybrids. A true hybrid model has thick sections of foam in the upper layers, on average 2 inches’ worth (Sleep Train hybrids have an average of 4), designed to offset partner movement and cradle your curves.

Coils Offer Support + Bounce

Hybrid mattresses feature springs

Remember jumping on the bed as a kid? That springiness comes from, well, springs. Innerspring coils provide that well-loved bounce many of us seek out in a mattress. It’s the traditional feel we remember from mattresses growing up, before memory foam was available. In addition to springiness, an innerspring unit offers strong, sturdy, long-lasting support.

Memory Foam Offers Comfort + Motion Separation

Hybrid mattresses feature memory foam

Memory foam offers excellent motion isolation and conformability. It’s s well-loved for its ability to hug your curves, relieve pressure points, and adapt to your unique shape, weight and temperature. Memory foam also has an unparalleled ability to absorb partner movement, so if you tend to shift positions during the night, that motion won’t reach your spouse.

Together They’re the Perfect Team

The combination of conforming comfort, springy support and motion isolation is hard to duplicate with any other type of mattress.  If you’re in the market for a new bed and can’t decide between traditional and modern, go with a hybrid to get the best of both worlds. This is especially true if you’re shopping with your spouse: many times a conflicted couple can reach a compromise with a hybrid, each getting what they want.

Why Choose a Hybrid Mattress

Up until now, you had to choose between the pressure relieving, body-hugging comfort of memory foam and the traditional, proven support of innersprings. Now you can get the best of both worlds. If you love the bounce of innersprings and the comfort and conformability of memory foam, you’ve found your perfect match.

Who Might Like a Hybrid Mattress

Who might like a hybrid mattress

Many sleepers love the feel of being enveloped in memory foam, but others don’t. If you feel like an all-foam mattress absorbs too much of your body weight, the addition of springs helps provide that deep-down support and bounce-back you may be seeking. The innerspring unit helps redistribute your weight across the whole mattress, so it feels more like you’re sleeping “on” the mattress rather than “in” it.
